What are Stocks?
Stocks are an asset class that allow investors to own a portion of a company and even have voting rights depending on the type of shares issued. Shareholders receive a portion of the company's profits based on the number of shares they own.
Stocks are typically traded on the stock market. Companies go public and issue shares to raise capital and grow their businesses. Investors, on the other hand, buy stocks to diversify their portfolios and seek to profit from stock price movements.
By trading stock CFDs with L&M Group, you can take long or short positions on a range of global individual stocks from well-known companies, including Apple, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, Nike, and McDonald's, and benefit from market movements without actually owning the underlying asset.
What are dividends?
Shareholders receive dividends. Dividend payments are the amount shareholders receive from the profits of the company in which they own shares, and are determined by the company's board of directors. Stay up-to-date on key financial events and earnings releases with our Earnings Release Calendar.
Although CFD traders do not own the underlying shares, they are still affected by certain corporate events, such as dividends. In the case of dividends, these corporate events trigger adjustments to CFD positions. These adjustments are not dividends in the traditional sense, but are intended to offset price changes that typically occur on the ex-dividend day. Long positions are credited with a positive adjustment, while short positions are credited with a negative adjustment.
Dividends are typically expressed in monetary terms. For example, the dollar amount each share will yield, but they can also be expressed as a percentage of the share's market value, a term also known as the dividend yield.
